How STEM Genius Helps Students Prepare for DSA

DSA preparation involves more than technical skills. Students also need to explain their work, collaborate with others and communicate confidently.

STEM Genius supports school shortlisting, coding and robotics development, portfolios, presentations and interview practice, with a customised pathway for each student.

For application basics and school requirements, read our quick DSA parent guide.

A Pathway Built Around Your Child

1. Understand Your Child

Parent preferences + student strengths

2. Shortlist Schools

Relevant published DSA criteria

3. Tailor Preparation

Skills, evidence and interviews

We help families shortlist potential schools using parents’ preferences, the student’s strengths and experience, and each school’s published DSA criteria.

There is no cookie-cutter template for every student or school. The shortlist informs technical development, project selection, portfolio content and interview preparation. Relevant work may support several applications, but its presentation should be adapted to each school’s requirements.

Understand, Test and Explain

Our coding and robotics lessons help students understand how their solutions work. Through Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify and Make, students practise testing ideas, debugging and explaining their decisions.

Robotics connects mechanisms, motors and sensors with programming. Coding pathways include Elite Coder, Python and Roblox Studio, with a suitable starting point based on the student’s experience.

PRIMM: Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify and Make. Understand code, then create your own programme.

Approach Unfamiliar Problems

We teach brainstorming, the 5 Whys and Stanford d.school’s Design Thinking approach. Students learn to clarify a problem, explore alternatives and improve ideas through testing.

These approaches give students a way to begin unfamiliar tasks and explain their reasoning during interviews, even when they do not have an immediate answer.

Design Thinking: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. Revisit any stage as you learn.

The 5 Whys

Ask successive “why” questions to investigate beyond the first explanation.

Learn to Collaborate

Listen

Consider different viewpoints

Contribute

Share ideas and responsibilities

Include

Invite everyone’s contribution

In competition classes, including FIRST LEGO League, students practise the FIRST Core Values: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork and Fun.

We coach them to consider different views, share responsibilities, acknowledge contributions and resolve disagreements respectfully. These experiences help students participate constructively in group interviews and explain their own role in a team.

Make Their Learning Visible

Purpose

What were you trying to achieve?

Contribution

What did you personally do?

Decisions

Why this approach?

Improvements

What changed after testing?

Learning

What would you try next?

We help students select and organise portfolio evidence, including projects, code, demonstrations and relevant achievements.

We also help prepare presentation scripts. Students practise explaining what they did, why they chose an approach and what they learned. Scripts provide structure, while follow-up practice helps students speak naturally in their own words.

Prepare for the Interview

Research the School

Greet Respectfully

Listen

Attentive Posture

Appropriate Eye Contact

Include Others

Our coaching covers school research, interview etiquette, body language and clear answers. In group discussions, students practise building on suggestions, inviting others’ views and contributing without dominating.

Mock interviews turn advice into practice. Students receive feedback on their explanations, listening and presentation, then work on areas that need improvement.
