In a small office at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Foo Chi Jao sat at his desk, watching as his colleagues sifted through stacks of shipping certificates. Over 12,000 documents had to be manually checked and verified yearly—an exhausting, time-consuming process that left little room for error. Determined to make a difference, Foo and his team developed DocuMind, an AI-powered tool that could scan and verify documents with remarkable accuracy. Instead of manually reviewing each certificate, the system used large language models (LLMs) to understand different formats and extract key information. The results were astonishing—99% accuracy, cutting processing time from days to mere minutes.
For Foo, the moment of validation came when a colleague from the shipping department, who had spent years manually verifying documents, tried DocuMind for the first time. “This will save us so much time,” she said, her relief evident.
Foo’s story is just one example of how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is transforming industries. Digitalisation is reshaping sectors beyond traditional tech spaces—healthcare, finance, urban planning, and now, even maritime.
